172. ¿Existe alguna diferencia entre I’m fairly busy, I’m quite busy y I’m rather busy?

Las tres palabras se usan para intensificar el significado de adjetivos y adverbios, y se pueden traducir como ‘bastante’, aunque esto solo es una orientación en cuanto a su valor, no tanto en cuanto a su uso. La diferencia entre ellas es el grado de intensidad que transmiten.

Fairly es bastante suave, tibio, por así decirlo. Responder fairly good cuando tu novia te pregunta qué opinas de su aspecto seguramente no sea la mejor forma de asegurarte una agradable velada:

Trisha said that they do that kind of work fairly frequently.

I was fairly certain that it was old Eric Greaves, but when I said hello, he blanked me.

En el inglés británico, y usado con adjetivos y adverbios graduables, quite es algo más fuerte que fairly:

Dianne was bullied quite a lot when she first started at school.

Although he was quite strict, Mr Baxter was the best boss I ever had.

Sin llegar al nivel de very, el uso de rather supone un grado más en la escala de intensidad. Tiene algo de ‘más de lo esperado / normal / deseado’:

I hear that Danny Kendall has his own business, which is going rather well.

After an uncomfortable silence, Fay said that it was rather cold for April. We all agreed.

Al igual que quite, rather también puede usarse con sustantivos. Aunque esto es más habitual en textos formales que en el lenguaje hablado:

It was rather a surprise and a disappointment to find Michael Doyle & Sons would sell such a poor quality product.

Rather también se usa con verbos, y a menudo su efecto es conseguir que las opiniones resulten menos tajantes:

Mrs McClusky rather enjoyed her job, and wasn’t looking forward to retirement one bit.

I rather think Benny was hoping we’d ask him to come along.

I was rather hoping, Mr Scott, that your daughter, Clare, would be here this evening.

Los usos de rather superan con mucho los de un simple modificador. Lo usamos para corregirnos a nosotros mismos o para aportar mayor precisión a lo que decimos:

I don’t like film adaptations of books, or rather, I don’t usually.

Mr Bronson, I’m sorry to say that Ms Mooney didn’t fall but, rather, she was pushed.

Rather than se aproxima en significado a ‘en lugar de’:

Robbie kept his money under the bed rather than in the bank.

Jackie usually wanted to walk to work rather than get / getting the bus.

He’s going to marry her? Well, rather him than me!

También se usa would rather con el significado de would prefer:

I’d rather be lying in a hot bath at home than spend my evening talking about work.

I’m sure Suzanne would rather not have to speak to Joseph ever again.

Cuando queremos que alguien haga algo usamos tiempos verbales de pasado, igual que hacemos con I wish:

I’d rather you didn’t tell Sam any of this, ok?

She’d rather you hadn’t been there. That’s why she didn’t invite you.
